Event name: 'Botanical Alchemy' with India Flint

INDIA FLINT, BOTANICAL ALCHEMY WORKSHOP, Wednesday 5 June

Join the author of Eco Colour and Second Skin for a day of intense play;  dyeing soft wool travel wraps, using delightfully simple 'ecoprint bundle dyeing' techniques.  'We will begin by stitching a selection of natural fabric patches into our wraps, then use the simplest of ingredients - leaves and water from the garden at Glenmore - to add exquisite natural colour to our work.  After lunch and while the wraps are in the dye-pot, we'll stitch a beautiful Tsunobukuro bag in which to keep the wraps safe when they're not draped around our shoulders'.

About India Flint:
www.indiaflint.com

India Flint uses ecologically sustainable contact print processes from plants and found objects together with walking, drawing, assemblage, mending, stitch and text as a means of mapping country, recoding and recording her responses to landscape - working with cloth, paper, stone, windfall biological material, water, minerals, bones, the discarded artefacts and hard detritus of human inhabitation, the local weed burden.  She is the original discoverer of the eucalyptus ecoprint and holds a Master of Arts (res) from the University of South Australia (2001) for her research into sustainable eucalyptus dyes for textiles.  The processes may result in pieced cloth for architectural environments and/or bodies, be recorded as a still or moving image or be evoked in text. Flint has designed costumes for dance ('breathe' for Leigh Warren + Dancers was included in the 2012 Edinburgh Festival of Arts), written books on dyeing and felting, exhibits internationally and has work in museums in Australia and Europe.

Workshop description:

This hands-on day will begin at 10am with morning tea on arrival, followed by fossicking with India for materials in the garden. India will then guide you through the process of stitching and dyeing before you sit down to enjoy a seasonal lunch prepared by Mickey, from the garden (while the dye-pot bubbles away in the background).  An unfurling of the wraps, along with some more simple stitching will complete the afternoon, which we expect will end around 4pm.

Cost $360.00 per person, including materials
