Event name: Great Dixter Twilight Supper

Great Dixter Twilight Supper with Aaron Bertelsen, Vegetable Gardener and Cook at Great Dixter and Barbara Sweeney, Friday 16 February, 2018

Aaron Bertelsen's love of gardening dates back to his childhood, when he would work with his grandfather in his vegetable garden back home in New Zealand.  He studied Social Anthropology at the University of Otago before going to England in 1996 to volunteer in the garden at Great Dixter.  He subsequently studied for a Diploma in Horticulture at Kew Gardens, England, and spent two years at Jerusalem Botanical Gardens in Israel, where he is still a trustee.  Aaron returned to Great Dixter in 2005, becoming the vegetable gardener and cook in 2007, working alongside head gardener Fergus Garrett, and he has been there ever since.  Aaron is regularly invited to speak about gardening at events worldwide. The Great Dixter Cookbook, Recipes from an English Garden, Aaron Bertelsen. Phaidon.

Barbara Sweeney's insatiable interest in food led her to careers in professional cookery and writing about food: she writes about regional Australian produce and producers for Country Style, was regional editor and restaurant reviewer for The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide and editor of Cheap Eats in Sydney for 10 years.  In 2012, she started the food writers' festival Food & Words, held annually in September, which combines her two loves, food and writing.  She is also the Talking Cookbook, a kind of agony aunt service for cooks, at Carriageworks Farmers' Market and a judge at the National Honey Show.

Join us at 6pm for a glass of elderflower cordial on arrival in the Hayshed, where Aaron will be delighted to sign your book and you can wander around the garden as it basks in the twilight.  A long-table supper (prepared by Mickey, overseen by Aaron) in the Dairy will commence at 7pm, during which, between the main course and pudding, Barbara Sweeney will quiz Aaron about his recipes and cooking and gardening at Great Dixter.  We anticipate the event will end at around 9pm.

Cost $176.00 per person (including copy of The Great Dixter Cookbook)
