Mediterranean Meandering with Trisha Dixon, Thursday 1 March 2018.
"When I envisage the Mediterranean, it is a tumble of silver olive trees, languid agave with their spears reaching into that bluer than blue sky which mirrors the endless blue of the sea, the gentle tonk tonk of goat bells and the scent of wild thyme on the air. It's all about the light - searing, almost surreal in its brilliance - and - the sparkling clear waters as well as dramatic landscapes, changing from island to island".
"I prefer off the beaten track as a way to travel - the excitement of arriving slowly on a boat into the harbour of some of the Mediterranean's most beautiful, less tourist infested islands....there is that intoxicating fragrance as you approach - a mingling of the Mediterranean pines and wild thymes. If you have half a romantic soul, it's hard not to fall under the spell - as many writers and artisans have for centuries".
"I fell totally under the spell on my first visit to the island of Hydra some years ago with its timelessness and antiquity, its calm pace of life with no cars, motorbikes or vehicles - donkey paths lead to remote villages and whitewashed stone houses which are amongst the most elegant in the Mediterranean".
About Trisha Dixon
It has been on writing and photography assignments throughout the Mediterranean that Trisha has learnt more about gardening in her own garden, far away in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. There, Trisha lives in an 1830's colonial home with a creek flowing through the garden once tended by three full time gardeners in its hey day, but now surviving on Trisha's nil by mouth water regime which makes it possible for her to have a life AND a garden!
Trisha is a passionate advocate of embracing your climate, something she imbued from 20 years research into the life of leading Australian landscape designer Edna Walling, and from growing up at the foot of an accomplished gardener mother who would rather go to the beach for family holidays each January than have a green lawn.
An active member of the Australian Garden History Society and Mediterranean Garden Society, Trisha's extensive travels have morphed into leading tours to favourite destinations, including the Mediterranean.
Trisha has written a number of books, her most recent being Adagio: Living and Gardening Mindfully. She has recently been commissioned to write another two books for the National Library of Australia, following on from three previous books and a collection of images the NLA has collected of her photography.
